titr linkedin

Professional Headline Linkdin

picture linkedin

Put your best face forward Linkdin

activity linkedin

Activity in Linkdin

summry linkedin

Make your case in Linkdin — but keep it short and sweet.

volunteer linkedin

Highlight volunteer work in Linkdin

 recommendation linkedin

Seek the right recommendations for Linkdin

(Endorsment)

groups linkedin

Plug in to groups and organizations in Linkdin

connection linkedin

Talk to strangers in Linkedin — but only on common ground.

Tips for an Elevated LinkedIn Profile

Describe the job you want, not the one you have.

Getting to the top of an organization requires sky-high levels of experience, creativity and motivation. Senior-level professionals can roll the three qualities into one with a powerful statement on the profile's headline. Your headline should highlight your areas of expertise, hint at your tasks and responsibilities, and showcase skills that will help you tackle larger challenges in a new role, says Mr. L.

For example, in comparison to "portfolio manager," "strategic alignment expert" is a more specific way of showing and telling the senior-level skills you want to highlight.

Because job titles can vary from organization to organization, a descriptive headline controls your message and establishes your brand.

Put your best face forward.

Your profile photo should reflect your status as a leader. You should look as if you're going into an interview: tidy business attire and a professional smile.

The image itself needs to be impeccable, well lit, with a neutral background. "I'm always amazed by how many senior-level people have really poor-quality photos," Mr. Bondale says.

You may even want to pay for a professional headshot. "It's well worth the effort," he says.

Stay active.

Don't treat your profile as a static entity. Use it to burnish your image as a thought leader by promoting your latest blog posts or sharing links to articles.

For ideas on what to share, track what other senior-level executives "like" and "share" based on your interests, Mr. L says.

Anything you provide needs to be appropriate for your network, says Mr. Bondale. "LinkedIn is not the right place to promote interests that aren't related to your professional brand," he says.

Make your case — but keep it short and sweet.

The summary section is your elevator pitch, says Mr. Bondale. Use succinct language, and limit your strengths to a few paragraphs.

Break out your specialties at the end with search-friendly keywords. "Think of all the words relating to your expertise and try to cover as much ground as possible [in the space allotted]," says Mr. Dufour. For example, "project management" and "risk management" are solid searchable options. But you should also remind potential employers that you're already trusted with executive-level responsibilities such as "measuring maturity" and "implementing change management initiatives."

Show off, and be specific.

"The key is to highlight the achievements and quantitative parameters of the positions," says Mr. Bondale.

Whether it is in paragraph form or a bulleted list, include details such as budget, duration, team size and achieved outcomes — especially as it relates to organizational goals met or benefits realized.

Given your long career history, resist the temptation to pack everything in — or risk losing attention. "Provide details of the last five to 10 years, focusing on significant achievements," says Mr. Bondale.

Prune unrelated experience to save space and keep your past experience focused on your desired future role. "Remove any experiences that were short, took place early on in one's career or do not support career objectives, such as internships, temp work in 1990 or a stint in a different industry," advises Mr. Dufour.

Highlight volunteer work.

Volunteering for a senior project professional never hurts, says Mr. Bondale. "If volunteer experience leveraged your project management skills or demonstrated commitment to the profession beyond the normal working day, that's a very good differentiator."

However, list volunteer work under its designated section. Mixing it into your work experience might send mixed messages. "It can be dangerous to list non-profit contributions as an experience for those who want to work in the for-profit sector while helping non-profits on the side," Mr. Dufour says. "You do not want to imply a career transition to the non-profit sector and confuse recruiters."

Seek the right recommendations.

Senior-level practitioners tend to have more experience and, therefore, more opportunities to validate their accomplishments. But shoot for quality over volume.

"There's a danger in having generic recommendations," Mr. Bondale says. "You always have to be conscious of the clutter factor."

Focus on recommendations from people who can speak to your qualifications, such as a project sponsor who benefited from your expertise to meet business goals, says Mr. L.

Paired with the newer Skills & Expertise section — where connections can endorse you for qualifications  recommendations provide a powerful profile boost. "Seek five endorsements from close connections, and ask for a written reference to back up the endorsement," says Mr. Dufour.

Plug in to groups and organizations.

Both the Groups and Following sections of your profile serve a similar purpose to your Activity feed, albeit a less visible one. Joining professional groups and following companies or individuals related to your industry demonstrates deep knowledge and awareness of your professional community.

Talk to strangers — but only on common ground.

To expand your network of like-minded leaders — and become more visible to potential future employers — establish meaningful connections. "The same rules apply for online connections as they would for face-to-face networking. There has to be something in it for both parties. Otherwise, it looks like you are just 'using' the connection," says Mr. Bondale.

When connecting with leaders you may not know personally, set professional ground rules. "It is okay to reach out to executives who are not acquaintances, as long as it is not followed by unsolicited communications," says Mr. Dufour.

You could also search for "anybody who would be an actionable addition to your network," he says. "That means that they are likely to help and respond when contacted — so that would exclude Fortune 500 CEOs for most people."
